Ceramics II & III

Course Description: In Ceramics/Pottery2 students will further explore hand building and wheel throwing used in ceramics. Emphasis is placed on the proper use of tools, 3-D design and good craftsmanship. The development of problem solving and higher-order thinking skills is also a major focus. We will also touch on the history of ceramics throughout the world. Since you have passed Basic art and Ceramics 1 you will be held at higher expectations.

Week 1 ( 8/ 6 – 8 / 10 )

Monday- Introduction to Ceramics

Tuesday- Studio Procedures / Expectations

Thursday-  Ceramics Pre-Test

Friday- Pinch Pots Assignment/PPT of Monster pinch pots.

 Week 2 ( 8/ 13 – 1 /17)

Monday- Intro to pinch project.

Tuesday- Create designs for pinch pots.

Wednesday- Start building pinch pots.

Thursday- Continue Pinch Pots.

Friday- Finish Pinch Pots.

Coil Pot Project

Week 3 ( 8/20 – 8/24 )

Monday- MLK Holiday

Tuesday- They will finish their research and sketches coil pots.

Wednesday- We will begin building the coil pots.

Thursday- They continue to build up their walls.

Friday- We will finish the pots and write their reflective paper.

Week 4 ( 8/27 – 8/31 )

Monday –  We needed another day to finish the coil pots.

Tuesday – Students will fill out the grade sheets and write their reflective papers completing our coil projects.

Wednesday – We begin our new unit Slab Building. Students begin by reading Soft Slab building, research images, and create sketches for their designs.

Thursday –PPT presentation on Sqrafitto, creating designs.

Friday – Students begin drawing the sgrafitto designs.

Week 5 ( 9/3 – 9/7 )

Monday – HOLIDAY

Tuesday –  Students will begin rolling and cutting  slab tiles. They will also read the chapter on Surface Decoration.

Wednesday – Teacher demo, transferring onto clay/under-glaze surface/carving techniques using line variety and 50/50 positive/negative design.

Thursday – Students continue carving designs tile #1.

Friday – We continue finish carving designs.

Week 6 ( 9 /10 ) – (9/14 )

Monday – Students roll sgrafitto tile #2.

Wednesday – We begin transferring design for tile #2.

Thursday – Students begin carving of tile #2.

Friday – Students finish completing and refining both tiles.

Week 7 ( 9/17 – 9/21 )

Monday – Students finish their reflective writing papers/grade-sheets.

Tuesday – Introduction to Surface Decoration and firing.

Wednesday – Students glaze pinch/coil/texture pottery.

Thursday – Students finish glazing pottery.

Friday-  Students read Soft Slab building.

Week (9/24 – 9/28) FALL BREAK

Week 8 ( 10/1 – 10/5)

Monday – Students create Soft Slab/Mold Project.

Tuesday –Introduce Lantern Project.

Wednesday – We start with our lantern project, drawing designs.

Thursday – We roll out our slab and leave over night to firm up.

Friday  – The designs are transferred to the clay slabs.

Monday – We continue to transfer designs.

Tuesday – Students begin carving the lanterns.

Wednesday –Students continue cutting away the openings.

Thursday – Students work on cutting and refining pieces.

Friday – Students are finishing lantern projects.

Week 10 (10/15 – 10/19)

Monday – Students continue with masks.

Tuesday – We will create sketches for the masks.

Wednesday – We begin creating armature/add clay.

Thursday – Students add, subtract, and sculpt the clay masks.

Week 11 ( 10/22 – 10/26)

Monday – Students write their reflective papers.

Tuesday – “Students read The firing Process part 1”

Wednesday – “Students read The firing Process part 2”

Thursday – Introduce Texture and still slab box project.

Friday – Write Cultural Mask Labels for show.

Week – 12 (10/29 – 11/2)

Monday- Students begin their texture boxes and sketches.

Tuesday- Today we will collect and roll out the slabs with texture.

Wednesday- Students will cut the slabs and let them dry/set up.

Thursday – We join the panels and add coils to the inside joints.

Friday – Students will cut and notch their lids / finish boxes.

Monday- Students will write their reflective papers for clay boxes.

Tuesday- Introduce Bas Relief Project.

Wednesday – Students begin Bas Relief sketches / projects.

Thursday – Clay is subtracted and added to sculpt their piece.

Friday – The building of Bas Relief Project is due today. ****

Monday – We begin our final project and  wheel throwing.

Tuesday – Students sketches and building.

Wednesday – Students continue with their art.

Thursday – We refine are pottery.

Friday – Students finish building their final projects.
