Welcome to our 2017 Spring Art Studio Blog. 

VA-Comp Students please bring one sheet of poster-board to class and a paper folder with pockets and prongs by Wednesday 1-12-2017. We will fold the poster-board to create a large portfolio to store your student art in throughout the semester.

*Students should always come prepared to class with a pencil, pen, and notebook paper.*

Week 1 (1/5-1/6)

Monday- Holiday

Tuesday-Teacher Workday

Introductions and studio tour.

Friday-Students start sketches for logo designs.

Contour Line Project

Week 2 (1/9 – 1/13 )

Monday- We will continue working on logo designs for poster-board/portfolios.

Tuesday- Students will ink or color in their logo designs.

Wednesday- Today students will finish their logos / portfolios.

Thursday- Finish Reflective writing  and grade-sheet.

Friday – Discussion What is Art?


Week 3 ( 1/16 – 1/20 )

Monday – HOLIDAY, No school

Tuesday- Students will learn about the Design Elements and create a foldable.

Wednesday- Begin new project based on the element LINE and Zentangle Pattern.

Thursday- Students begin with research and sketches.

Friday- The sketches are then redrawn larger and refined.


Week 4 ( 1/23 – 1/27 )

Monday – Draw the designs larger and begin transferring to the final drawing paper.

Tuesday – Students finish inking in their designs and include a variety of pattern/lines.

Wednesday – We continue to work on our Zentangle Contour Line projects.

Thursday – Today students finish, will fill out grade sheets and complete their reflective    writing for their contour line Zentangle projects.

Friday – Students will create a sketchbook for sketching throughout the year.


Week 5 ( 1 / 30 – 2 / 3 )

Monday – Teacher demonstration learning to draw Linear Perspective and Space.

Tuesday – We will finish the perspective exercises in class.

Wednesday – Today teacher demonstration on shading geometric shapes with pencils to show value and form.

Thursday – Students will begin their Surrealism and linear perspective project. Beginning with reading and questions about the Surrealism Art movement and sketches.

Friday – We will begin our sketches, planning out the drawings.


Week 6 ( 2 / 6 – 2 / 10 )

Monday – Today we begin value and shading.

Tuesday -Teacher demonstration learning to draw Linear Perspective and Space.

Wednesday – ***LAST DAY TO SUBMIT PAST PROJECTS BEFORE PROGRESS REPORTS**Students were to finish research and Surrealism sketches over the weekend. Today we begin the large rough draft.

Wednesday – Students will finalize rough draft.

Thursday – Today we transfer to the final draft and begin shading with pencil or ink.

Friday – Last day for students to shade final copy.


Week 7 ( 2/13 – 2/17 )

Monday – Last day to work on the Surrealism project in class.

Tuesday – Surrealism project and reflective writing due at the beginning of class.

Wednesday – Introduction to Cave Art and Egyptian Art.

Thursday – We begin our sketches for our project.

FridayWe will begin our clay cartouche project.Rolling out clay base.


Week 8 ( 2/27 – 3/3 )

Monday- Students will add their hieroglyphics.

Tuesday- Students will refine and finish their projects.

Wednesday- Students make sketchbooks day 1.

Thursday- Day 2 of sketchbooks.

Friday- Students read color theory and take notes.


Week 9 ( 3/6 – 3/10 )

Monday- We begin our unit on color theory this week.

Tuesday- Students will start their sketches today.

Wednesday- We begin to sketch out our designs.

Thursday- Continue with the layout of our designs.

Friday- Add twelve sections and four values for each hue.


Week 10 ( 3 / 13 – 10 / 14 )


Monday – We finished drawing out our preliminary sketches.

Tuesday – Students will transfer their designs to the final paper.

Wednesday – Teacher demonstrates mixing and painting techniques.

Thursday – Students begin painting, starting with the primary colors.

Friday – We continue with the color wheel and mixing secondary colors.



Week 11 ( 3/ 20 – 3/ 24 )


Monday –Students will finish the color wheel and the intermediate colors.

Tuesday – Students will add their value scales.

Wednesday – We will begin painting our Egyptian clay cartouche pieces.

Thursday – Last day to finish painting clay / color wheel.

Friday – Students will finish all painting, reflective writing, and grade sheets.


Week 12 ( 3 / 27 – 3 / 31 )

Monday – Introduce Religious Art and the Illuminated Letter.

Tuesday – Drawing demonstration, Sketches, and Preliminary drawings.

Wednesday – Transfer to final paper and color.

Thursday – Continue Coloring

Friday – Continue coloring / pep rally.


HOLIDAY- (4/3 – 4/7)

Week 13 ( 4 /10  – 4 / 14 )


Monday – Finish coloring the Illuminated Letter.

Tuesday – Apply ink wash to the Illuminated Letters / reflective writing assessment.

Wednesday – Introduce Non-Western Art and  Mask Making.

Thursday – Sketches due, cut masks, and add features.

Friday – We continue to add our features to our armature.


Week 14 ( 4 / 17 – 4 / 21 )

Monday – Continue adding features / paper layer #1.

Tuesday – Continue adding features  / paper layer #2.

Wednesday – We begin painting our masks today.

Thursday – Students finish painting.

Friday – Last day to complete the cultural masks.


Week 15 ( 4 / 24 – 4 / 28 )

Monday – Introduction / Reading to Japanese Art and watercolor painting.

Tuesday – Teacher demo and student practice – painting techniques.

Wednesday – Students paint their background for their tree painting.

Thursday – Teacher demo and student practice – painting nature / calligraphic line.

Friday – We continue with our Japanese inspired watercolor paintings.


Week 16 ( 5/ 1 – 5 / 5 )

Monday – Students complete their watercolor paintings.

Tuesday – Students write their reflective writing.

Wednesday – We worked in our sketchbooks on still life today.

Thursday – Students were assessed with the Davis Drawing Assessment.

Friday – Students were introduced to the Auto-Biographical Comic Project.

Week 17 ( 5/8 – 5/ 12)

Monday – Students will begin writing their comic story.

Tuesday – We begin with sketches in our sketchbooks.

Wednesday – Layout story board.

Thursday – Start illustrations.

Friday – Refine illustrations and Ink.

Week 18 ( 5/15 – 5/19 )

Monday – Due Comic Project / write reflective papers.

Tuesday – Introduction to Pop Art and Peter Max.

( Students begin reading and sketches ).

Wednesday – Students begin their preliminary drawing.

Thursday – Students will color the final art.

Friday – They should complete the coloring and details of their Pop Art.

 ***Student project checklist / Notebooks Due***

( Students write their reflective writing assessing their work. )

Friday – Students will create a review sheet / study guide.

Finals Week ( 5/22 – 5/24 )

Monday – Students will review for finals.

Tuesday – FINALS – DAY ONE, ( 1st Block and 2nd Block ).

Wednesday – FINALS – DAY TWO, ( 3rd Block and 4th Block ).
